Polyurea Coating

Choosing a protective coating for your project is essential to the manufacturing process. However, with so many paints, coatings and linings to choose from, it may be challenging to know which product will best protect your investment. Polyurea offers many advantages over other coatings. Here’s what polyurea is and how it can benefit your project.

Polyurea coating explained

A subgroup of polyurethane, polyurea requires a chemical reaction between isocyanate and a resin blend. It’s exceptionally durable and waterproof, and it cures instantly. In the past three decades, it’s become a popular product in numerous industries, including:

  • Oil and gas
  • Industrial flooring
  • Food and agriculture
  • Marine and boat
  • Mining
  • Water management
  • Wastewater
  • Waterproofing

You can apply polyurea to just about any material, including concrete, wood, metal and plastic. It’s a perfect coating for roofs, floors, concrete, steel structures and piping.

Benefits of polyurea coatings

Polyurea has several advantages over other coating materials:

  1. No VOC emissions. Polyurea releases no volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, so it won’t harm the environment or human health.
  1. Sets immediately. Polyurea cures in seconds, can be walked on within a minute and cures fully in 24 hours. The minimal downtime required for application reduces labour and application costs.
  1. Extreme durability and corrosion protection. Polyurea protects against mechanical impacts and harsh industrial stress, protecting the metals underneath from corrosion.
  1. Fully waterproof. Polyurea is fully waterproof and immersible within one to three days of application. The material can bridge cracks and adheres well to concrete and metal.
  1. Extremely elastic. Polyurea can endure elongation of up to 1000 per cent and remains elastic at temperatures of -40 C.
  1. Chemical resistant. Polyurea is incredibly resistant to all types of chemicals, and you can increase the chemical resistance with a special topcoat.
  1. Indoor and outdoor use. The characteristics mentioned above mean you can apply polyurea indoors and outdoors, and it still cures at temperatures as low as -20 C.
  1. Come in various colours. Your polyurea coating can look the way you want it, with multiple colours to choose from.

Despite all the benefits, polyurea isn’t always the best choice. It’s best to speak to an expert before making a decision.
